Oral Hygiene with Invisalign

A woman brushing her teeth while looking in the mirror.Nowadays there are different types of braces and options for straightening your teeth. Conventional braces are glued to the front of the tooth to secure a wire. Self-ligating braces use a wire that is passed through a clip located on the bracket to secure it in place. Lingual braces use the same principle as conventional braces except the brackets are glued to the back of the patient’s teeth instead of the front. There are also aligners that use clear trays to shift teeth into their proper position. At Smile Family Dentistry we offer Invisalign clear aligner trays to our patients as our preferred method of tooth alignment.

What is Invisalign?

The Invisalign system uses a set of clear aligner trays to correct and straighten teeth. Invisalign is made out of plastic that is safe for your mouth and strong enough to align and move your teeth into the desired position.

You will first come see our dentist who will do an exam and ensure you are a good candidate for Invisalign. An x-ray will be taken of your teeth and an impression made of your teeth to mold the aligner trays. Aligner trays will be worn for two weeks at a time, gently moving your teeth into position. After each two week period you will move on to the next set of trays.

The system can correct mild to moderate malocclusion. If the dentist determines that your jaw or teeth are needing too much correction, one of the other types of orthodontic braces may better suit you.

Invisalign Trays Are Removable

Aside from Invisalign being nearly invisible, one of the other benefits is that the aligner trays are removable. Your aligner trays should only be removed to eat and to brush your teeth.
By being able to remove the Invisalign while you eat and drink, you are not restricted from eating any of your favorite foods, as you typically are with metal braces. You do not need to stay away from chewy or sticky foods, or fear biting into hard items like apples or corn on the cob, which can easily become stuck and troublesome with metal braces. Many patients appreciate this while they are having their teeth straightened.

Since Invisalign is removable, they encourage better and easier oral hygiene maintenance during your alignment process. You will remove your aligner trays and brush and floss your teeth as you normally do. This makes keeping your oral hygiene routine easy and consistent while you are using the Invisalign system. No worries about not being able to reach certain areas of your teeth. It is important to clean your Invisalign aligners before putting them back in your mouth. Ideally, they will be soaked in an antibacterial solution when you are not wearing them, so you can make sure they are clean and that no plaque or bacteria form on them. If you are out and about and unable to do this, make sure to at least rinse off your aligner with cold water before placing it back in your mouth after eating.
